This is a really great blog post from Wendy Spencer, the new CEO of the CNCS. It is about all how instrumental AmeriCorps has been in the Joplin recovery effort. Although our program wasn't able to participate in the recovery, our AmeriCorps Missouri brothers and sisters have been doing amazing work this past year and we can be proud to serve under the same banner.

Bailey's Great Story
"When I first began serving with CAPA AmeriCorps as a student therapist, I had a 4-year old client who was proving to be very challenging for me. I wasn't exactly sure what I was supposed to do with him and felt lost. He was very resistant to any type of direction, had behavioral issues at school, and was throwing huge temper tantrums when he didn't get what he wanted.
After talking with my supervisor and the child's parents, I decided to take a different approach with this client through attachment based therapy. The parent's are very supportive and have taken every suggestion that I have given them, which makes the process much easier. They have gotten the client into a more individualized, structured school and have made contact with a psychiatrist upon suggestion from me.
I have seen a huge change in his behavior since making all of these changes. He has been able to accept change more easily and has been able to take direction from me in session, without getting upset. This client is close to termination now and at the beginning I thought that he would be in treatment for much longer than that!"

The Spirit of Hope
This is the story of a woman we will call "T" and her two little girls. It was submitted by one of our Family Support AmeriCorps Members, Stacy. Stacy and our other Family Support Members work with families that have young children and are in need of a stronger support network.
"T is the mother of two little girls, 7 and 16 months old. When we began working together in October, she had very little to call her own. Many of the things most people take for granted were a dream for her; she didn’t even own a pair of shoes. T had been evicted from her apartment just a few months prior and had lost all of her material possessions. What she did have and continues to possess, however, is an amazing spirit full of determination, hope, and above all, profound love for her children. She knows that she is capable of replacing the items necessary for daily living, and that she has the will to create a secure home for her family. Today, T is beginning classes and hopes to have a career in nursing. She sees herself working with newborns, sharing her deep love of children with other mothers like herself."

Hello's and Goodbye.
It has been a busy month for CAPA AmeriCorps!! We have said goodbye to two AmeriCorps Members and said hello to five new Members.
Goodbye.
Last week, we had our first Member complete her AmeriCorps service. Tracy Adams was a faithful counseling Member from Avila University and she will be missed. Karen Costa, our Clinical Director, could often be heard whispering in wonder over the excellent state of Tracy’s files and it was obvious that she did a great job building rapport with her clients. She was an excellent Member and we wish her well in all she does.
We also said goodbye to Debbie Ryken who joined CAPA AmeriCorps in August but was unable to complete her term of service due to some extenuating circumstances. Debbie was an enthusiastic Member and clearly has a passion for helping others. Good luck, Debbie!
HELLO!!
Samantha Gamble is a half-time Member who just graduated from KU with Bachelor's in Psychology. Samantha decided to do AmeriCorps before going into grad school and we are so thankful she chose CAPA as her volunteer site. Samanatha will serve a unique role in that she will serve both in Family Support and the Counseling departments. She will be working with Family Support as an outreach specialist to spread the word about our services in order to expand our impact on the community. She will also serve as a Crisis Case-Manager taking the calls and walk-ins of people who are in need of immediate assistance regarding counseling services. We are so happy to have her on our team!
Shanan Finely and Daisha Law are our newest Counseling AmeriCorps Members. They are both students in the Avila Counseling Program and will serve throughout the remainder of the program year. I've already been hearing from other CAPA staff how impressed they are with these two ladies because of how they and other new interns are significantly cutting down on our client waiting list. Thank you Shanan and Daisha for making our counseling services more available to hurting children and families in our community!
In our Family Support department, we have been joined by Michelle Emerick, a Social Work student with the University of Central Missouri, and Maggie Malone, a Social Work student at Missouri State. These ladies have showed an enthusiasm for their new roles as Family Support Case Managers and Educators that is contagious! Michelle and Maggie will be providing in-home case-management for children and families who are prenatal or have young children and they will also be helping with abuse prevention education around the community. Thank you ladies for your fresh energy and passion for serving our clients!
Welcome to CAPA AmeriCorps!

Pictures from the CAPA AmeriCorps Wrapping Day!
This year, CAPA AmeriCorps Members pitched in to help meet the needs of our CAPA clients over the holidays with our Holiday Helpers program. Since many of our families weren't sure how they would be able to buy gifts for their kids AmeriCorps Members ran toy drives, recruited sponsors and helped their client families sign-up for the program.
Also, serveral of our Members participated in a gift wrapping day by either coming themselves or recruiting volunteers. Over the course of the day, we were able to wrap hundreds of gifts. And thanks to the efforts of our Members and of the community, we were able to brighten the holidays for over 100 children and their families.
Here are a few highlights from the day.
